Chapter Fifteen

The horses were wandering around the larger fenced in area outside the paddock. All except Darius who was saddled and standing beside the open door of the barn. Jason reappeared for a minute and adjusted the straps. Was he taking Darius out for exercise? Maybe Graham should just go back to the house and hide in his room, lick his wounds, and think himself into an anxiety attack. He sighed and headed toward them.

Jason slipped up into the saddle like it was as easy as taking a step. He held his hand out to Graham.

“Oh no…” Graham held his hands in front of him. “Um, big horse…way off the ground…never been riding before.”

“Put your left foot in the stirrup and swing your right leg up and over behind me,” Jason instructed.

“Oh God,” Graham said. His heart thudded.

“Even if you fall, it will be a semi-soft landing, and you’ll try again till you can do it.” Jason waved to the fresh layer of hay that had been laid down. Still Graham hesitated. What if Darius bucked at his weight or something? “Bastian did it,” Jason reminded him.

“With Charlie,” Graham muttered.

“And you have me. Who do you think has been riding and handling horses more?”

Wasn’t that the truth? Graham put his left foot into the stirrup, grabbed Jason’s hand and kicked off, but almost ended up falling backward. Jason steadied him. “Like riding a bike. Don’t jump, just use the strength of your left leg to get the height. Then lift your right leg. I’ll help.”

Graham let out a long breath, steeling himself for another try. Charlie had just lifted Bastian into the saddle. Jason might be able to lift Graham. He was crazy strong. And wasn’t that one hell of a turn on? Graham put his foot in the stirrup, giving himself a minute to adjust so he had it right, then took Jason’s hand, pushed himself up and finally one leg over. He almost slid over the other side. Jason had him, helped him to adjust in the seat, and even coaxed Graham to slide closer so he could wrap his arms around Jason’s waist.

“We’re just going to stand here, right?” Graham asked, holding on for dear life. “This is a lot higher off the ground than I’d like to be.”

Jason laughed that throaty little sound that made Graham hard. There would be no way Jason could have missed it.

“Sorry,” Graham muttered.

“Because you find me attractive and therefore are aroused?” Jason asked.

“I don’t know, maybe? I guess, yes?”

Jason laughed again, a little chuckle, nudged Darius and the horse began to move.

“Oh, God!” Graham clung to Jason. Now he knew what Bastian had meant by terrifying and thrilling, all at once. They walked around the yard. It wasn’t so bad. More motion than Graham had expected. He curled himself around Jason, trying to relax into him, trusting him as he gave Darius commands with his knees and feet. There was no kicking, digging into Darius’ side or bridle to pull on.
